Obituary

MURPHY, John David age 84, of Roslindale, formerly of Mission Hill, passed away peacefully at home on January 31, 2022. Beloved son of the late Cornelius and Lena (Murphy) Murphy of Mission Hill (County Kerry Ireland, Baraduff and Killorglin). Beloved husband of Barbara (Kane) Murphy for 55 years. Devoted father of Anne Logan and her husband Harry of Hanover, Jane Donegan and her husband David of Dedham, and Marybeth Donegan and her husband Brian of Westwood. Loving Poppy of Harrison, John, and Delia Logan, Patrick and Michael Donegan, and Brendan and Andrew Donegan. Brother of Kathleen Murphy of Brookline and the late Helen (Murphy) Tyner, Daniel Murphy, and Agnes Murphy. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

John served in the United States Air Force from 1956-1960 as a morse code translator. He attended Boston State College on the GI Bill where he graduated in 3 years as an English Major. He worked as an insurance adjuster for many years but had a lifelong passion for writing. John also taught for a time in the Boston Public School System. John entertained many Bostonians singing Irish songs in a band called Blackthorne. He was a great singer but also taught himself how to play the tin whistle. John had many things to be proud of but he was most proud of his 7 grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held at the P.E. Murray - F.J. Higgins, George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home 2000 Centre St. West Roxbury on Wednesday, February 2nd from 4-7pm. Funeral from the funeral home on Thursday, February 3rd at 10:30am, Followed by a Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church, Roslindale at 11:30am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.
