Shirley G. Mixon, “Ola”, 85, of Ocilla, Georgia, died Monday, January 24, 2022, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Friday, January 28, 2022, at the Ocilla United Methodist Church, in Ocilla, Georgia, with the Rev. Jay Roberson officiating. Interment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery, in Irwin County, Georgia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services in the church sanctuary.
Ms. Mixon was born July 27, 1936, in Irwin County, Georgia, to the late Raymond Fred & Lena Mae DeBerry Green. She lived in the community most of her life. She attended Irwin County High School and later Ben Hill Irwin Tech, where she received two certificates of completion in Office Occupations. Ms. Mixon also earned four certificates in Continuing Education from the Georgia Hospital Foundation. Ms. Mixon retired after 43 years of service with the Irwin County Hospital as the Data Processing Supervisor. She was named Employee of the Month for the State of Georgia by Blue Cross Blue Shield. Ms. Mixon worked with Irwin County Hospital and Blue Cross Blue Shield to help keep health care costs in check. She was co-chairman for the Relay for Life and a member of Ocilla United Methodist Church’s team. She was the top individual fundraiser for the county. She loved nature and working in the flower garden. She earned Ocilla Garden Clubs Garden of the Month. Ms. Mixon was member of the Ocilla United Methodist Church where she served on the nominating board and was a member of the choir.
She is survived by her son, Fred Evans & Susan of Ocilla; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Norma Handley of Ocilla. Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Young and a brother, Lamar Green.
