Obituary

Susan Marjorie Hopkins of South Yarmouth died January 14, 2022 at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness.

Susan was born in Essex, Connecticut to Stephen and Marjorie Hopkins on October 12, 1941. She grew up in Essex, attended Valley Regional High School and the Paier School of Art in New Haven, CT. She studied under the late Rudolph Zallinger, famously known for “The Age of Reptiles” mural at the Yale University’s Peabody Museum.

Susan was an artist at heart and enjoyed painting large, surrealistic, impressionistic pieces and landscapes in oil on Masonite. She was a voracious reader and also enjoyed writing poetry and studying and writing about the Russian Romanovs. Susan was a free spirit with a wonderful sense of humor, loved holidays and birthdays and adored her family, ever championing their dreams and pursuits. She had a heart of gold.

Susan loved being near or on the ocean and spent several years in Barbados and traveling the Caribbean Islands when she was young. She was ever in tune with nature, taking in sunrises and sunsets, never afraid of a thunderstorm. It was her love of the ocean and the light of Cape Cod that drew her to Provincetown to further inspire her artistic endeavors. It was in Provincetown that she met her life partner Lenny Caporale of 45 years and they had their daughter Melissa. Susan had her first daughter Julie from a previous marriage.

Susan entered into the home healthcare field and loved caring for Provincetown’s elderly as if they were her own parents or grandparents and continued on when she relocated to the Dennis/Yarmouth area. Susan loved nature and animals, taking in stray cats, befriending squirrels and chipmunks, enjoyed spending time in her gardens in the summer, having cookouts, going to the beach, and visiting the swans on the nearby ponds.

Susan is predeceased by her parents Stephen and Marjorie Hopkins and brother Stephen “Bop” Hopkins Jr. She is survived by her life partner Lenny Caporale of S. Yarmouth, daughter Julie Papetsas and husband Thadd and their children Julianne and Dimitri of Provincetown and Boston as well as her daughter Melissa and her daughters Arielle and Kylee of Bourne. Dear sister of Judith Lake of Pennsylvania. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
