H. Hal Hilton, 80, of Ocilla, Georgia died on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at his residence.
Memorial services will be held 4 PM, Sunday, February 6, 2022, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Ocilla, Georgia, with the Rev. Gary Griffin and the Rev. George Paulk officiating. Interment will be private.
Mr. Hilton was born on February 26, 1941, in Ocilla, Georgia, to the late Oswin Randolph & Georgia Ann Hilton. He was a 1959 graduate of Irwin County High School. He served his country in the National Guard. Mr. Hilton was a Master brick mason, working with his cousin, Gerald Roberts for many years. He was a gentle man who loved animals, coaching his daughter’s softball team, Hal’s Gals, spending time with his grandchildren and his wife and making music. Music was Mr. Hilton’s passion. He played rhythm guitar and sang lead with several groups such as Leighann and the Hearts of Bluegrass, the Pop Shop, etc. Mr. Hilton also wrote several bluegrass songs that are still played today. Gospel, however, was his favorite genre. He loved to minister through music and could always be called on to sing in church. He always sang at numerous funeral services and weddings. He is renowned for his rendition of "Were You There". He was an active member and deacon of Pinetta Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy M. Hilton of Ocilla, daughter, Kristi Hilton Roberts of Douglas, son, Michael Hal Hilton of Ocilla: grandchildren: Sarah Nancy Elizabeth Holton & Josh, Hallie Madison “Madi” Roberts & Kevin Tinajero, and Nathan Erik Hall; sister, Lanelle & Bob Hinkle of Nashville as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and 4 sisters.
