Emma (Olufs) Meyer, 89 formerly of Whiting, NJ and Delray Beach, FL, passed away suddenly Monday, January 10, 2022. Born on the small Island of Fohr, Germany, she immigrated to the United States in 1955 and became a U.S. citizen. She worked initially as a nanny, then as a waitress at Schrafft’s in Manhattan. She met Heinz Meyer in Germantown, Manhattan and they married there in 1956. They moved to Brooklyn and then to Queens where they had two children, Harold and Debbie. Eventually moving the family to Oyster Bay, NY in the early 1970’s.
Emma loved being a homemaker. She was a cub scout leader and a girl scout leader and enjoyed doing all things with her young family. She didn’t complain about being first mate to her husband even though she couldn’t swim. She sewed, cooked, cleaned and ran a tight household for her husband, children and the neighborhood kids. She prided herself on doing things on her own until the day she died.
Emma is survived by her son, Harold, his wife Ginny (Rogers) Meyer of Wayland, MA and their children Tory Meyer of Maynard, MA and Jake and Rachel (Rutfield) Meyer of Upton, MA. Emma was a proud Oma (grandmother) to Tory and Jake and recently having moved to Hopkinton, MA, she was thrilled to be able to develop a relationship as Great Oma with Lacey and Jordan Meyer - her great grandchildren. Emma is also survived by her brother Peter and sister-in-law, Enken Olufs of Fohr, Germany, 3 beloved nieces, a grandniece and two grandnephews. Emma’s daughter Debbie predeceased her on October 4, 2020.
Emma had inherent Freundlichkeit – she always made everyone, and anyone feel comfortable and at-home in her presence. She enjoyed spending time with family and talking on the phone to her many friends. She loved the simple things in life, like collectibles and writing cards and letters.
A private Memorial Service was held on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home with burial following at Lakeview Cemetery, Wayland.
