Richard F. “Dick” Carino passed away peacefully, comforted by his family’s love, on Thursday, January 6th. He was 87.
Raised in Winthrop he was the son of the late Ernest and Phyllis (Conti) Carino. Dick graduated from Boston College High School, and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Boston University. He then attended Suffolk Law School. It was during his years at BU that Dick embarked on a lifetime of public service. Dick enlisted in the Army ROTC program at BU and after graduation served with the Marine Corps Reserve for over three years. In his younger years, Dick worked as the day manager for his family’s famed restaurant, The Coach Grill, on Tremont St. in Boston. In May of 1966, soon after the sales tax was initiated in Massachusetts, Dick went to work for the tax department. However, with his legal training, he soon moved on to the court system and, with his earned reputation for professionalism, patience and fairness, he eventually became the Chief Probation Officer at Somerville District Court. Throughout his years in the court, he was not only known for his ability to help those on probation to move their lives in the right direction, but he initiated scholarship and intern programs for college students in criminal justice programs. His 38 year career in public service was not limited to his job but also encompassed his involvement in the Medford community. He was the long time treasurer of the Medford Sons of Italy, served on the boards of Tri City Mental Health, the Friends of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the Immaculate Conception Parish Schools. He was also the vice chair of the Medford Off-Street Parking Commission. Ever the consummate gentleman, Dick carried out all his obligations in his customary warm and kind manner.
Amidst all his activities, he always held his family as his priority. He looked forward to family dinners, quiet time at home and family trips throughout New England and to Disney World in Florida. He was a loving husband, father and papa to his five grandchildren.
The beloved and caring husband of Marianne E. (Capizzi) Carino, Richard was a devoted father to Chrisanne C. Webb of Melrose and Marianne C. Smith and her husband Phil of Melrose. Richard was a loving Papa to Tyler, Sophia and Julia Webb, and Zoe and Sadie Smith.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit on Thursday, January 13th at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford from 3 – 7 PM and again on Friday morning at 9 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 AM at the Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant Street, Malden.
