Augustus “Gus” Nicholas Luparelli, PhD, 86, of Worcester, Professor Emeritus of Business at Worcester State University died Tuesday, January 4th in UMASS Memorial Medical Center – University Campus. His wife of 57 years, Marguerite L. “Peggy” (Millette) Luparelli who died in 2015. He leaves his three daughters, Jean Stone, Julie and her husband, Russell Kinell, and Ann and her husband, Rafael Ortiz all of Worcester; eight grandchildren, Nicole Luparelli and her husband, Lee Duerdin, Jason Hintlian and his wife, Kristin , Kim Hintlian, Anjuli Richard and her husband, Adam, Joseph O’Leary and his wife, Katie, Carolyn Marengo and her husband, Dylan, Kelli O’Leary and Cynthia Hernandez and her husband, Jose; great grandchildren, Olivia Hintlian, Nicholas Hintlian, Dylan Marengo, Jackson Blanchard, Jose Hernandez and Alexis Hernandez and his brother’s Edward Luparelli and wife Judith and Theodore Luparelli and wife Betty. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
He was born in Worcester, the son of Augustine E. and Regina (Spingla) Luparelli and graduated from the former High School of Commerce. In his younger years, Gus spent much of his time at the Piccadilly Restaurant, which his parents bought in 1933 and later sold in 1961. Gus graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from Fitchburg State College, a Master’s Degree from Worcester State University and a PhD from the University of Connecticut. Gus was an educator for 23 years and taught at Wachusett Regional High School, Tahanto Regional High School and was the Director of Industrial Arts in the Framingham Public Schools. In 1982, he left teaching for the computer industry and worked for PictureTel formerly Prime Computer where he worked for 14 years, retiring in 1999. After retiring from the computer industry, Gus went on to become a professor at Worcester State University in the Business Administration & Economic Department, retiring in August 2014 and remained an adjunct professor until 2015. Over the years Gus was a member of Our Lady of the Angels parish where he was a lecturer, CYC leader and member of the Men’s Club.
Gus enjoyed spending time with his family whether it was summers in Wells, Maine at the “Beach House” or Saturday morning breakfasts with Papa’s Famous Pancakes. He relished building toys for his great grandchildren; race cars, doll houses, trebuchet, garbage trucks and a Thomas the Train toy box. He was an avid Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots fan and enjoyed a good book, playing his piano, golfing, woodworking and model building. In the past few years Gus spent much of his time designing and building his beachfront, dream home in Puerto Rico. He took his role as a loving dad, papa and big papa very seriously, keeping his family always close.
His funeral is Tuesday, January 11th with a Mass at 5:00 p.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street. Burial will be private. Visitation will be in the church from 3:00 p.m. until the start of the service. Face masks will be required at all times.
