Obituary

Catherine M. (Grimsley) Benincasa, age 82, passed away on January 5, 2022, lovingly surrounded by her family. She was the loving and devoted wife for 55 years of the late Vincent P. Benincasa until his death in 2019. Born in Dorchester, MA, Catherine was the daughter of the late George V. and Jane (Daley) Grimsley. She attended St. Joseph’s Grammar School and Malden Catholic School For Girls. After high school, Catherine attended Boston State College (now UMass Boston) and received her degree in Education.

Mrs. Benincasa taught Special Education for many years. She left teaching to devote her life to raising her family. Once her youngest was school age, she returned to the classroom as a substitute in the Winchester public school system.

In her spare time, Catherine enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family. She was an avid reader and animal-lover, who loved going to the beach. She was a huge football fan and enjoyed watching the Patriots.

For the past 3 and half years she lived with her daughter Lisa and her family in North Andover. Catherine was lovingly taken care of by her four children, as an expression of their love for her, and for her selfless dedication to their lives.

Catherine is lovingly survived by her cherished children: Anne Mague and her husband Robert of Windham, NH, Jeanne Thorpe and her husband Douglas of Melrose, Vincent Benincasa and his fiancé Tracy Long of Leominster and Lisa Benincasa Hagerty and her husband Christopher of North Andover. She also leaves behind 14 adored grandchildren: Samantha, Julia and Stephen Mague; Lindsey, Jack & Jenna Thorpe & Katie D’Entremont; Nicholas, Hannah & Faith Benincasa; Matthew, Patrick & Catherine Roy, and Kane Hagerty. She is further survived by her brothers, Thomas Grimsley and his wife Nancy of Stoughton and George Grimsley of Medford, and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for Visiting Hours at Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Thursday, January 13, from 9:30AM-12 noon, followed by a Funeral Service in the Funeral Home at 12 noon. Masks are required. Burial is private.
