Joan M (Senecal) Pereira, 94, of Provincetown passed away peacefully at Seashore Point on December 29, 2021. She was born on January 19, 1927 in Buffalo, NY and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Julia (Gast) Senecal.
A vibrant free spirit, Joan had a devoted passion for art and spent the majority of her life establishing deep roots in the outer Cape Cod art community. She was notably involved in the Fine Arts Work Center and Castle Hill Center for the Arts, as well as an artist-in-residence at the Highland House Museum.
While soul-stirring skyscapes, still life’s and portraits acutely displayed her deeply intrinsic talent for painting and color science, her voice was a renown characteristic as well, performing at several local venues in addition to being a long time member of the St. Mary of the Harbor choir.
Even though Joan spent the main part of her life in the Provincetown and Truro area, she also was an adventurous traveler taking trips to Haiti, Tahiti, Israel and other worldly destinations.
Joan was a presence. For those who entered a room of Joan’s attendance: her energy, laugh and wit permeated the atmosphere. Now in her absence, we find that same beauty of spirit alive in her art.
Joan leaves her daughter, Christine Roderick of North Truro, and her three sons and spouses: Richard and Hong Pereira of Dennisport, Craig and Janet Pereira of Naples, FL and Jeff and the late Monica Pereira of Wasilla, AK. She was blessed with many grandchildren: Heather and her husband Stephen Harper of Truro, MA, Laurie Ann and her husband Matias Galloglaigh of Plymouth, NH, Richard Pereira and his partner Jodi Lynn of Fall River, MA, Jan and her husband Fran Taylor of Watertown, MA, Elena and her husband Bobby Rice of Truro, MA, Scott Pereira, Jared and his wife Monica Pereira of Naples, FL, Laura Pereira of Fosston, MN, Kali and her husband Eddie Cantos of St. Louis, MO, Ryan Pereira of Marietta, Georgia and Dominic Pereira of Boise, ID. She has 23 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and 4 nieces as well. She was pre-deceased by her brother Richard Senecal.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at 10:00 am, Thursday May 12th at St Mary's of the Harbor Episcopal Church, 517 Commercial St. Provincetown, Mass. Burial will follow.
The family would like to thank Beacon Hospice and Seashore Point for their support and care over the years.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Soup Kitchen in Provincetown (skipfood.org), where she spent many happy lunch hours holding court with great friends!
