John F. Menezes, Jr., 82, of Mattapoisett died July 28, 2002 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
He was the husband of Mary L. (Rezendes) Menezes and son of the late Joao F. and Maria (Tanque) Menezes.
Mr. Menezes was born in New Bedford and lived in Mattapoisett most of his life.
He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church in Mattapoisett.
Mr. Menezes was formerly employed by Grossman's Hardware in New Bedford as manager of the lumber yard for many years until his retirement. He later was employed at the Annie Maxim House in Rochester for 15 years.
He served in the US Navy aboard a submarine chaser in the Asiatic-Pacific theater during World War II. He was a member of the Florence Eastman American Legion Post 280 in Mattapoisett.He enjoyed fishing, gardening, woodworking and his grandkids.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Menezes, and his wife Donette, of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Susan Rowley, and her husband Charles, of West Wareham; a sister, Mary Paiva of New Bedford; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Manuel Menezes.
His private funeral service was held Tuesday, July 30th in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home For Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Route 6) Mattapoisett followed by burial in St. Anthony's Cemetery.
