Margaret Mary Veer, 99½ years, died peacefully on Christmas Eve, December 24th, 2021 at 1 PM. Margaret is survived by her children, Kathleen Mendes and her late husband Charles Mendes, Jr., Carol and Kenneth VerCammen, 7 grandchildren (Charles III and Kim Mendes, Christopher & Karen Mendes, Kevin & Christy Mendes, Colleen & John-Pierre Chiron, Brian Mendes & Siobhan Glennon, Kenneth VerCammen, Kathy & Kevin Sullivan), 11 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by the love of her life Alfred Veer.
Margaret was born on June 20th, 1922 to John Edward Duggan and Marie Beatrice Langlois in New Bedford, MA. She graduated from St. Killian's Elementary School and attended New Bedford Vocational School. She worked as a checker in grocery stores around New Bedford during her working years. She was a homemaker for multiple generations in her family and the families in her community. Always caring for others.
A devout Catholic, Margaret was a lifelong active member of Holy Name Church, enjoyed participating in both the Women's Guild at Holy Name and the Jolly Seniors of Acushnet. She adored dancing, especially with her husband, and was happiest when she was surrounded by her family and friends. An excellent cook, her family looked forward to her homemade breads at Christmas and the warmth of her "Grammy Soup." A sharp mind, Margaret read the paper daily and loved to talk about current events, what she had seen in her life, and all of her memories. She brought so many years of joy to those around her because of the amazing human she was. In 1999, as a tribute to her 76th birthday, her daughters wrote: "It is her strength, her never-ending love, her boundless capacity for forgiveness, and her ability to see the good in everyone that forms the character of this truly good woman... Our mother is God's gift to us."
Her Funeral will be held on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at 10 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 11 AM. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery with a repast to follow at Century House, Acushnet.
