Obituary

Daniel Patrick Lyons passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 20th, 2021 after a valiant battle with a pulmonary disease. Dan was a man of tremendous integrity, kindness and grit. He lived his life on his terms, but always put his love for his family before everything else.

Dan was born in Worcester, MA son of James T. Lyons and Catherine McGonagle Lyons.
He leaves behind his wife, Mary K. Russell of Kittery ME, and his 2 adult children, Catherine Lyons also of Kittery ME and Will Lyons and his fiancé Nicole Paul of Canton, MA., one sister, Maureen and her husband Mike Cupoli of Shrewsbury, MA., and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers, James T Lyons, Francis M. Lyons, Kevin D. Lyons, John (Jack) Lyons, and his sisters Dorothy Brodeur and Marjorie Chase.

Dan loved Brookline and was excited to begin a new chapter in Maine. He was an active member of the Brookline Parks and Recreation Commission for over 15 years and sat on many committees. Dan was always at the forefront of important change and progress for the town he loved so much.

Dan loved the game of golf for its honesty, sportsmanship and performance as benchmarks of how he lived his life. The lifelong friendships through the game brought him to play the world’s best golf courses. What he appreciated most was the friends he played with at Putterham and his weekly summer league at Wachusett Country Club with his “Worcester boys”. He made the weekly trek even when he wasn’t feeling well because it made him feel so good to be around friends who loved him dearly. Dan was meticulous in how he approached the game from what he wore to his forever long set-ups to finally make the shot. On his final play date he was named MVP for the league’s season ending tournament. He played some of his best golf that day which is exactly how he wanted to finish.

We will celebrate the life of Danny Boy when we all can gather in the warm spring. Arrangements will be finalized in the weeks ahead and family and friends will be notified of memorial plans. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Steps to Success Program, 2 Clark Rd. Brookline, Massachusetts 02445 (617-713-5310). Above all things Dan was known for his kindness, his compassion, and his championship of the youth. He always went above and beyond to ensure that all young people in Brookline had equitable access to recreation and resources, therefore it is most fitting that donations in his name continue to support the young people in the community that he loved so much. Please visit their website at: https://www.stepstosuccessbrookline.org/ to make a donation. Dan will be greatly missed by all who knew him and his family is deeply grateful for the love and prayers they have received on his behalf.
