Thelma “Christine” Martin, 87, of North Truro, MA (by way of Abilene, TX) went to be with the Lord on Sunday December 26, 2021 surrounded by her daughter Deborah, daughter-in-law Kaye, and Granddog Ella.
Christine was born in Jones County, TX on March 18, 1934 to the late Maurice Carter and Effie Powers. She was the youngest of 9 children. She worked multiple jobs while raising her 3 children following a divorce including working at the Timex Watch Factory and Sam’s Wholesale Club as a demo lady.
After getting her first passport at the age of 83, a trip to Ireland in 2019 fulfilled her lifelong dream of traveling abroad. She immediately felt at home in Ireland, and enjoyed visiting the Titanic Museum in Belfast & initiating a pub crawl at the Temple Bar. She outlasted us all that night in Dublin, singing and dancing in the streets. It was almost like her life had come full circle as her ancestors had originated from Cork.
Christine loved playing games, and is still the only person we all know that rolled Yahtzee twice in one game. She had a competitive spirit and never hesitated to include others in her endeavors. “The more the merrier she’d say.”
After moving to New England to live with her daughter Deborah, Christine made new friends from all walks of life. Some of her most treasured memories were trips she made with the COA in Provincetown.
She took up painting in her late 50’s after receiving a paint set for Christmas and discovered a hidden talent. Mostly self-taught, she dabbled with acrylics and oils and was talented enough to show her work at the Provincetown Art Association & Museum even selling a piece. You would often find her displaying around the outer Cape area in smaller art shows. She loved walking on the beach and discovering seashells she could paint on and gave most away as gifts.
Besides her parents, Christine was preceded in death by her 8 siblings and her son Robert Reese Martin. She is survived by her daughter JoNell Fry of San Saba, TX, daughter Deborah Martin of North Truro, MA (Kaye), and 9 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 16 great, great grandchildren. The family also wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Deb Poletto and Laura Seabury for their support during her illness.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 30th at the Christian Union Church 27 Shore Road in North Truro, MA. A calling hour at 10:00 a.m. will be followed at 11 a.m. with a service. Burial at the Old North Cemetery in North Truro will follow.
Her heart was always open and she’d surround you with her unconditional love. She will be truly missed. If desired, memorials may be made in her name to Glen Highland Farms (the Border Collie rescue organization that placed Ella in her life), the Christian Union Church (which brought her a sense of community and friendships), and the COA of Provincetown.
