Mary Rita Harrington, the light of her family’s life, entered heaven on Christmas morning, December 25, 2021, (her mother’s birthday) at the age of 78. She shared her final days with the people she loved the most.
Born and raised in Somerville, she was the devoted daughter of the late Rita (McGowan) and Arthur J. Harington. Mary spent her childhood surrounded by extended family. She moved to Winthrop when she was in high school. After graduating from Winthrop High, she went to work in the insurance industry, starting out at USF&G and finally retiring from Mass Fair Plan. Mary loved being outdoors. She particularly loved the ocean. In her younger days she enjoyed swimming, boating, and waterskiing. As she grew older, she spent time kayaking and riding her bike.
Mary was a kind and generous woman who made a positive impact on the lives of many. She easily recognized both humans and animals in need and she had a passion for caring for them.
Her greatest joy was her family. Beloved by her sisters, Rita Quirk, Carol Adamson, and Ann Crossman all of Winthrop, who will carry with them the memory of her unselfish nature and loving spirit.
Cherished by her nieces, Dawn Letterie (Jim), Tracy Carlsen (Chris), Robin Murphy (Mark), Kelly Adamson (Tommy), and Jill Buccini. They will remember her as the “fun aunt” who was always there for them when they needed her.
Adored by her great nieces and nephews Taylor, Shannon, Mark, Jake, Jenna, Ryan, and Heather. She was an active presence in their lives, and they will treasure the memories they made together forever.
Mary was predeceased by her younger brother, Buddy.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home 210 Winthrop St. Winthrop, on Thursday, December 30, from 10-11:30AM, followed a service in the funeral home beginning at 11:30AM. Interment will be in Winthrop Cemetery.
As Mary was a lover of animals, especially cats, memorial donations in her honor are asked for the Northeast Animal Shelter at neas.org/together.
