Corcoran Jr., Walter P. of Needham was born December 22, 1929 in Boston, MA. He grew up in Cambridge where he enjoyed a very active and memorable childhood. He was the only child of Walter and Catherine (Sheerin) Corcoran.
After attending Cambridge High and Latin School, he moved on to Boston College where he graduated with a BS in business administration in 1953. After College, Walter answered the call of his country during the Korean War where he enlisted in the Navy’s Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. He served two tours of duty: one in the Mediterranean, the other in Japan.
He was married to Janet Glynn from North Quincy on February 20, 1954. After serving in the Navy, Walter and Janet moved their growing family to their first house in Needham MA. After 45 years in Needham they split their time between Fox Hill Village in Westwood MA and Fiddlesticks Country Club in Ft Myers FL where he was able to pursue his lifelong passion for playing golf.
While Walter loved golf, family was his first love especially his 7 children: Walter Corcoran (Carol) of Walpole MA, Mary Woodward of Needham, MA, Paul Corcoran (Mary) of Needham MA, Anne O’Connor (Joseph) of Needham MA, Joseph Corcoran (Mary) of Needham MA, Janet Lopes (Edward) of Needham MA and Patricia Gallagher of Plymouth, MA and his 31 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He loved watching all their sporting events and was well known and respected in youth sports as a baseball and football coach as well as the de facto videographer of Catholic Memorial track and cross country.
A private funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bartholomew’s Parish on Thursday, December 23rd, at 10:00 a.m. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Walter to your favorite charity.
