Maria Joao (Azevedo) Machado, 90, of Lowell, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 19, 2021, with her loving family at her side. For the past Sixty Seven years, she was the beloved wife of Manuel F. Machado.
A daughter of the late Manuel and the late Emilia (deJesus) Azevedo, she was born and raised in Terceira, Azores, Portugal. She was educated there, and married the love of her life, Manuel in Portugal before coming to the United States with him in 1970, to raise their family. She made her home in Lowell, and was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church.
Maria was a gifted seamstress and while in Portugal, made sails for the local fishermen and sewed Military Uniforms. Upon coming to the United States, she worked for Grace Shoe and Carroll Shoe, as well as various local shoe shops and worked as a seamstress in the Lowell shops.
She will be remembered by her family and friends as loving to cook, loving to laugh, as well as enjoying crocheting. She always had a great sense of humor and would give you the shirt off her back if you were in need. In addition, she enjoyed traveling, visiting relatives in Canada, but most of all loved time spent with her family and her close friends, Fatima Veira and Carolina Santos.
Besides her loving husband, Manuel, she is survived by her children, Fernando M. Machado and his wife, Rosemary, of Lowell, Fernanda M. Machado of Lowell, and Rui Machado of Terceira, Azores; her seven grandchildren, Michelle Shay and her husband, Matt, of Dracut, Michael and Jennifer Machado, of Andover, Mellissa Correia of Dracut, Scott Machado and his wife, Kimberly, of Chelmsford, Jason Kosiavelon and his significant other, Mary Cunningham, of Lowell, Christopher Kosiavelon of Provincetown, and Katelyn Kosiavelon and her significant other Michael Arias, of Lowell, her nine great grandchildren, Tristan, Ashton, Mykeala, Dillan, Cameron, Jaxon, Travis, Stephen and Abigail, her sister, Celeste Montgomery of Dracut; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also the mother of the late Jose Gabriel Machado, and grandmother in law of the late Roy Correia.
In Accordance with the City of Lowell mandate, masks are required on Thursday Morning, December 23, 2021, all are welcome to attend Her calling hours 9 until 11a.m. on Thursday Morning at the McDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 Highland Street, Lowell.
Her Funeral Mass will be held at 12 Noon at ST. ANTHONY'S CHURCH, 893 Central St., Lowell. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.
