Obituary

Alberta M. ‘Berta’ Romano of Provincetown passed away Wednesday, December 15th at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness. She was 81.

Born in New Haven Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Marie [Cusano] Romano. She moved to Provincetown in 1977. She met the ‘Love of her life’ Carole A. Whitman shortly after arriving. Carole owned the Dusty Miller Inn, which they managed together and were among the first members of the Women Innkeepers of Provincetown. Carole died in 2002.

Berta was an owner at the Bay Colony Condominiums since its inception, and then became a trustee and manager, a position she held right up until the time of her death. She spent many volunteer hours for numerous causes in the community. She served on the Provincetown Board of Assessors, the Charter Change Commission, the Friends of the Council on Aging, and graduated from Provincetown’s Community Oriented Policing Academy. In 2001, Berta was recognized as Provincetown Senior Citizen of the Year.

She was an avid fan of both the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.

She is survived by a sister, Linda Fox of North Branford, Conn, many nieces and nephews, and by her special, long-term friends, Gerard and Kathy Menangas. Berta was devoted to family and her extended family at the Bay Colony Condos. She was well known and well loved by our community. Sisters Marge, Elaine and a brother John predeceased her.

At Berta’s request, there will be no service. A Celebration of her Life will be held at a date and time to be announced.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Provincetown Rescue Squad, 25 Shankpainter Rd, Provincetown, MA 02657.
