TEWKSBURY: Raymond C. Penney, a longtime Tewksbury resident, passed away at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston on Thursday, December 9, 2021.
He was the beloved husband of Kathleen (Quinn) Penney, with whom he celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on May 23rd, 2021.
Born in Lowell on July 17, 1947, he was the son of the late Everett F. Penney, Sr. and the late Marguerite (McCusker) Penney.
Ray attended the Immaculate Conception School in Lowell, Tewksbury Junior High School and graduated from Tewksbury Memorial High School in 1967.
Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of specialist during the Vietnam War era.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a Supervisor by the Gillette Corporation in Andover, where he worked for 25 years.
Ray was an active member and supporter of the Redmen Football Club. Ray’s positive impact on his friends and family earned him the nickname “Uncle Ray”.
He enjoyed many activities including snowmobiling, gardening, grilling, vacationing with family, boating, and spending time at the beach; especially gazing at the ocean on the porch at Plum Island. Ray was a big Boston sports fan, and his love of sports continued while watching his children and grandchildren play. His most recent joy was riding around town in his electric blue mustang with the top down. He was also known to be a handy man and could help with any project. His favorite activity of all was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Ray is survived by three children, Kerriann Ruocchio, of Tewksbury, Sherri Lynn Hanafin and her husband John, of Tewksbury and Sean P. Penney and his wife Lindsay of Chelmsford: seven grandchildren, Mikayla Ruocchio, Jake Ruocchio, Cameron Penney, Kelsey Penney, Ashley Penney, Shea Hanafin and Jack Hanafin. Ray was the brother of Everett F. Penney, Jr. and his wife Claire, of Dracut, Daniel J. Penney and his wife Alicia, of Middleton, CT, Peggy Black and her husband Robert, of Tewksbury, Kathleen Bowles and her husband Raymond, of Weare, NH, Theresa Burgos and her husband John, of Branchville, NJ and the late John E. “Jack” Penney and his surviving wife Claire (Doherty) Penney, of Tewksbury. He leaves many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Family and friends will be received Thursday, December 16th, from 4-7 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee Street, Tewksbury. His funeral procession will begin on Friday, December 17th at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. William’s Church 1351 Main Street, Rte. 38, Tewksbury.
