Obituary

Mary Teresa Sgro (nee Macaluso) was born on February 4, 1921 in Somerville MA. The oldest of 7 children, she was the daughter of Josephine and Rosario Macaluso. Devoted wife of the late Paul Sgro, whom she married in 1941.

Beloved mother of Paul A. Sgro, and his wife Corinne of Stoneham, and Marilyn J. Beecher, and her husband, the late Paul Beecher, of Peabody. Loving grandmother of Matthew Sgro and his wife Alison, and Andrew Sgro and his wife Denise, and great-grandmother of Emily, Luke and Caleb. Caring aunt to 24 nieces and nephews. She is survived by her brother Robert Macaluso, and was predeceased by her sisters Olga Fee, Annette Griffin, Edith Elder, and twin brothers Charles and Joseph Macaluso.

Mary loved well and, in turn, was loved by all. Her passion was her family and her magic was cooking and entertaining. Nothing would make her happier than to gather her family and friends together for a meal, no matter what the occasion. Mary embodied the expression “food is love.” She was also known to feed the neighbors when her caring eye noticed they were working hard and getting home late. One of her defining traits was her incredibly sweet demeanor. She was generous and serene, and had a smile and a kind word for everyone. She also loved to laugh, and it was a beloved and recognizable sound to her family and friends. Appreciating the everyday humor of life, she was quick to engage it whenever possible.

Mary worked at SBLI in Customer Service for many years. She & her husband retired to Cape Cod for 22 years where she delighted in walking to the beach with her sisters, and participating in the local community. Mary also loved traveling… to the South Pacific, Europe, and eastern and western Canada and USA. Her core values were simple yet profound: family, friends, good food, laughter, and an ability to enjoy the gift of Life. Mary celebrated her 100th birthday this year; she shared a century of kindness with the world.
