Walter P. (Walt) “Red” Weiss
Retired Tewksbury Post Office Superintendent of Postal Operations
TEWKSBURY: Walter P. (Walt) “Red” Weiss was born in Boston and moved to Tewksbury in 1938. He was the son of the late Willi and Helen (Kaminski) Weiss and husband of the late Ellen (Kehoe) Weiss.
Walt was a member of the Tewksbury Football Team that won the Suburban League Championship in 1944 and was selected to the Lowell Sun Suburban League All Star Team.
A veteran of World War II with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Units and served in Germany guarding NATO Headquarters with the 505th Parachute Infantry Unit. Prior to entering the service, he was with the State Guard for 2 years and after his Airborne service he served 8 years as a member of the Naval Reserve.
Walt returned to Tewksbury and worked 30 years at the Tewksbury Post Office, first as a Rural Route mail carrier, then retiring as Superintendent of Postal Operations at the Tewksbury Post Office.
After retirement from the Post Office in 1984, he worked for Chromerics in Woburn, MA for 10 years.
Walt was pre-deceased by his daughter, Sandra A. Iskra.
He leaves his son, William M. Weiss and his wife Eileen (Strombos), of Tewksbury: grandsons, Jess Mader and his wife Colleen (Danahy), of Tewksbury, Ryan Weiss and his fiancé Kate O’Connell, of Stoneham and Brandon Weiss, of Tewksbury: two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Kelsey Mader, of Tewksbury: one brother, Richard Weiss of Pennsylvania.
Walter participated in many activities at the Tewksbury Senior Center including three of their stage shows.
He was a charter member of the Tewksbury-Wilmington Elks Post # 2070.
Services for Walt were held privately. Interment was at Tewksbury Cemetery. Donations honoring his memory may be made payable to Friends of the Elderly and mailed to the Tewksbury Senior Center, 175 Chandler Street, Tewksbury, MA 01876.
