Obituary

Roger Masson, Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.), 92, of Acushnet, died Saturday, November 27th, 2021, peacefully at home after a period of declining health. He was the loving partner of Linda Guilbeault.

Son of the late Alfonse and Bertha (Damm) Masson, he lived in Acushnet most of his life.

Roger cared deeply for his country, community, and family. He proudly served in the U.S. Army for over 42 years during WWII and the Korean War and ultimately achieved and retired at the rank of Colonel. Roger was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, UMass Dartmouth, and Bridgewater State University, earning two master's degrees and a bachelor's degree. He was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier's Church in Acushnet. Roger retired from the Town of Acushnet as the Business Manager for the School Department. He also worked for the Acushnet Company as the Maintenance Foreman.

Outside of his professional life, Roger could be found repairing cars and small machinery. He proudly taught his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren the virtues of hard work, determination, and self-sufficiency. Roger also loved to travel and logged over 30 cruises with Linda. He traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Caribbean, and Europe with family and friends. He couldn't resist a deal and was known to spontaneously purchase wine, cars, and art if the price was right. At the same time, he'd make his own extension cords, search through buckets of bolts before buying one, and always did his own oil changes. He loved Saturdays and seldom missed breakfast and projects.

Survivors include his partner Linda Guilbeault; his children Nancy Masson of Acushnet, Roger W. Masson and his wife Jo-Anne of Acushnet, and Cindy Masson and her partner Donna Lee of New Bedford; the mother of his children, Lucille (Bernard) Masson; his grandchildren, Roger M. Masson and his wife Margo of Fairhaven, William Styler IV and his wife Jessica of San Diego, Elizabeth Hibbard and her husband Shawn of Norwell, and Katherine Mullen and her husband Patrick of Scituate; his great-grandchildren, Hunter and Parker Hibbard, Roger Walter Masson, and Maeve and Patrick Mullen; and the entire Guilbeault family.

He is predeceased by his siblings; Gilberte Domingos, Camille Loria, Doris Gallagher, and Blanche Gaj.

His Funeral will be held on Thursday, December 2nd at 9AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Mattapoisett, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church at 10AM and burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery. His visiting hours will be Wednesday, December 1st from 4-7 PM.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to his daughter-in-law, Jo-Anne Masson, who, with help from expert medical teams at Charlton, St. Luke's, Alden Court, and Compassionate Care Hospice of Taunton, provided Roger with incredible medical care.
