Auburn – Robert A. Mitchell, 88, of Auburn passed away peacefully in his home while surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.
Mr. Mitchell was married for 50 years to the love of his life, Barbara A. (Gardella) Mitchell who died in 2012. He is survived by his four children, Jacqueline A. Berube and her husband, James of Sturbridge, Tracy A. Williams of Dudley, Nancy A. Sweeney of Ledyard, CT and Robert A. Mitchell Jr. along with his wife Linda of Worcester; a brother, Jackie Mitchell and his wife, Marguerite of Quincy, MA; 9 grandchildren, Dawn, Shane, Eric, Ashley, Julianna, Gabriella, Olivia, Lauren and Mitchell; 3 great grandchildren, Cody, Tyler and Hunter; along with many nephews, nieces and family members.
Robert was born in Boston, son of the late Edward C. and Teresa P. (Manning) Mitchell and is predeceased by two brothers, Edward Mitchell and Albert Mitchell along with his wife, Mae. He grew up in Boston and was proud of his Irish heritage. After High School, he entered into the United States Navy where he proudly served our country during both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. While serving in the Navy, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
Mr. Mitchell worked his entire career with the United States Postal Service and retired after 35 years. He was a member of North American Martyrs Church in Auburn long with the Chester P. Tuttle American Legion Post 279 in Auburn.
Robert loved spending time at the ocean, especially at Wells Beach in Maine with his wife and loving family. He will be remembered by both his family and friends for his valuable advice and endless support, but even more so for the many stories that he told along with his true Irish Wit. His family may always cherish the many memories, but Robert will be eternally grateful to them for allowing him to be able to come home and spend his final days there surrounded by his loving family.
He will be greatly missed by his family. Anyone that had the honor of knowing Robert will remember how he touched their lives in so many different ways. The family would like to especially extend a heartfelt thank you to his granddaughter Dawn Berube and her fiancé, Chuck Allard with whom he lived, for the endless devotion and care that was shown to not only Robert but also to Barbara before she passed away in 2012.
A funeral mass for both Robert and Barbara will be held on Tuesday, December 21, at 6:30 PM at North American Martyrs Church 8 Wyoma Dr. Auburn. Military honors will be rendered upon completion of the funeral mass. Private burial services will take place in Wells, Maine. If you are unable to attend the funeral mass, it will be available for viewing via live stream by visiting his obituary on the funeral home website after 10 AM on Wednesday.
