Virginia R. FitzGerald, RN / BSN, 94, a lifelong Lowell resident, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at D’Youville Senior Health Care Center.
A daughter of the late James P. and the late Josephine M. (O’Donnell) Fitzgerald, she was born June 1, 1927, in Lowell and was educated in the City School System attending the Washington School, the Morey School, and graduating from Lowell High School, Class of 1944. She then graduated from St. John’s School of Nursing in 1947, and attained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Boston College in 1962.
Virginia was a resident of the Highlands Section of the City since her birth, and was a communicant of St. Margaret of Scotland Parish where she volunteered as a Lector for over twenty five years, and was a pioneer in women’s participation in the Catholic Church. She worked as a Registered Nurse for the Federal Government Veteran’s Administration Hospital System in Jamaica Plain and Bedford, retiring after forty years of service.
She was a member of the Boston College Alumni, St. Margaret’s Sodality, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE).
Her survivors include her brother, Leonard D. Fitzgerald as well as her dear nieces and nephews and her grand nieces and grand nephews. She is also survived by Becky Brown of Lowell who was her neighbor and caregiver.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Raymond J. FitzGerald, Dorothy A. Hudzik, Donald J. Fitzgerald and Paul F. Fitzgerald was an aunt of the late Mary C. FitzGerald, the late Nancy West, and the late Rosemary Hudzik, and was a great aunt of the late Katrina West. She was also predeceased by her closest friend for over seventy five years, Grace Moynihan and her sisters in law, Lydia FitzGerald, Shirley "Chickie" FitzGerald, Kay FitzGerald and Dot FitzGerald and her brother in law, Eddie Hudzik.
You are invited to her calling hours from 2 until 6 p.m. on Sunday. On Monday, Her Funeral will begin at 11 a.m. at the MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816. Her Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Margaret of Scotand Parish, 374 Stevens St., Lowell at 12 Noon. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery.
