Andrew Wolodymyr Holowinsky, born 25 October 1936, was a man who navigated the sea of his life with gracious warmth, charm, and humor in all that he accomplished. He was the youngest child of four, born to writer, Maria Lubomyra Kuzmowych and the Most Very Reverend Vasyl Holowinsky in Zarvanytsia, Ukraine. Through the ravaging effects during World War II on Eastern Europe, the family fled west to Austria from where, as displaced person refugees, emigrated to the United States and ultimately settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1949 when he was 13 years old. During his youth in Philadelphia, he made many enduring friendships through his active participation in PLAST, a Ukrainian youth-scouting organization, one of which was with his future wife, Motria Jackewych. During his undergraduate years, he developed a keen interest in biology which led him to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. Upon completion in 1961, Dr. Holowinsky had not only a Ph.D., but a wife and baby son, with whom he journeyed to New England where he had accepted a research fellowship at Harvard University. He remained at Harvard as a young instructor and then Assistant Professor of Biology until 1968. Having a research interest in the development of Euglena chloroplasts, and other matters concerning plant physiology, he accepted a tenured professorship at Brown University, where he taught, served on numerous university and departmental committees, and engaged in scholarly research for thirty-five years. He retired in 2003 as Professor Emeritus of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology; Biochemistry. A devoted father, Andrew enjoyed fishing with his son in the quiet ponds of Rhode Island, a loving father-in-law and grandfather, taking his grandchildren to the coast of Cape Anne to collect seaweed specimens, and a loving husband, traveling with his wife to enjoy the mountains and museums of New England. Faith was also a significant part of Andrew’s life at Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church, where he and his wife were active members of the church committee for many years, helping to steer decisions for the future good of the parish. After a serious illness stemming from complications due to diabetes, surrounded by his loved ones, Andrew entered his Eternal Rest with our Lord on November 13, 2021. Andrew is survived by his grieving widow, Motria, to whom he was married for 62 years, his son Tymish, daughter-in-law Lily, two grandchildren – Victoria and Treuvor – dozens of nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces living all across the country, all whom he loved dearly. Andrew remained a humble, gentle soul with twinkling happy eyes and heart throughout his life. All who were blessed to know him, and his warmth were enriched by his friendship. Visitation hours beginning at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church 146 Forest Hills St. Jamaica Plain on Saturday, November 20, 2021. A private grave-site interment service will be held on a future date.
