Augustino "Gus" Freitas, 88, passed away on Monday, November 8, 2021 at Elison Senior Living of Pinecrest in Largo, Florida after spending his last days surrounded by his family.
He was the beloved son of the late Antonio and Virginia (Fernandes) Freitas. He was the husband of the late Mary (Costa) Freitas and father to David Freitas and his wife Alicia of Largo, Florida, Teresa Firth and her husband Russell of Fairhaven and Donna Saunders and her husband Paul of Dartmouth. Gus had eight grandchildren, Kimberly Vecchio, Philip Freitas, Sarah Przystarz, Julie Marshall, Joseph Freitas, Ryan Saunders, Scott and Jordan Giambrone, and three great-grandchildren, Joseph Marshall IV, Clayton Saunders, and Jack Marshall. He also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Gus was also the brother of the late Frank, John, Antonio, Joseph, Daniel, Manuel, Raymond, and Deolinda Freitas, Celeste Souza, Alice Mello and Mary Arthur.
Gus was a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served his country in the Korean War. After leaving the service, he continued working for the government at Otis Air Force Base in Falmouth. Upon retirement, he continued his love for meat cutting at various stores in Massachusetts before retiring to Sarasota, Florida where he met and married the late Helen Meier. He was a loving dad and grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family. Gus lived life to the fullest and always had a smile for everyone. He loved to ski and was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing well into retirement.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no calling hours. His Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday December 16, 2021 at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, New Bedford. Burial with military honors will follow in Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Veterans Transition House, 1297 Purchase St., New Bedford, MA 02740.
