Obituary


Francis “Xie” Murphy, 97 and 10 mos. old of Whitman, MA drifted away on Wednesday, November 10, 2021.

Born in Roxbury, MA he was the son of the late Edward Murphy and Mary (Walsh) Murphy.

Xie was the loving husband of the late Marie (McMenimon) Murphy. Father of Francis and his wife Elva of Canton, MA and Thom and his wife Donna of Whitman, MA. He was the grandfather of Colleen LaGrasso of Canton, MA, Kevin Murphy of Canton, MA, Shannon Murphy of Jacksonville, FL, Shawn Murphy of Canton, MA and Meghan Murphy of Hyde Park, MA. Great Grandfather of Jessica, Kelsey, Amber, Hanna, Mason and Noah and the Great Great Grandfather of Penelope.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and VFW of Whitman and an active member of Rolling Thunder Massachusetts Chapter 1.

Xie was a WWII veteran and served in the US Army, 83rd Airdrome. He was proud to say he was in the first wave to land on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He fought in three campaigns including the Battle of the Bulge and Bastogne. He loved to share his memories of the war and was lucky enough to be able to return to Normandy and Belgium in the past few years and was recently awarded the French Legion of Honor.

He loved to play cards and his weekly card buddies will miss his quick wit.

Relatives and friends are welcome to attend his visiting hours to be held at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, MA on Tuesday, Nov. 16 from 5-8 p.m. and his funeral services at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel on Wed. Nov. 17 at 10:30 a.m. Following the service Xie will be buried at 1:00 p.m. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA beside the love of his life Marie.

The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute at 450 Brookline Ave., SW120, Boston, MA 02215
