SARA E. (MONROE) NOONAN, 88, a registered nurse and 37 year resident of Hull Village died on Saturday, April 15th at the Coyne Health Care Center in Rockland. The former Sara Elizabeth Monroe of Ridge Farm, Illinois, she graduated from nursing school in 1938 from Illinois Weyslan in Bloomington, Illinois and moved to Boston to work. During her long career as a registered nurse Mrs. Noonan was associated with a number of Boston hospitals including, the New England Baptist Hospital, the Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston City Hospital. Mrs. Noonan was one of the many dedicated nurses who aided victims of the famous Boston Coconut Grove Nightclub fire in 1939. During her years in Hull, she was the visiting nurse for the town. Later on in her career, she did private duty nursing.
Many remember Sara and her husband Edmund's hospitality to area boys and girls who would yearly skate at the Hull Village Fire Station ice pond. Her house was a refuge for cold skaters and hockey players in the winter months during the early 1960's The back porch of the Noonan house was literally filled with skates accumulated over the years.
She was a regular member of the Hull Garden Club and participated in local civil activities in Hull. Sara Noonan often known as "Betty" was often referred to as Sara "G" or Granny to those who loved her. Sara was also a member of the Organization of the Sons and Daughters of Civil War Veterans.
In addition to being a former resident of Hull, Mrs. Noonan lived in Whitman from 1996-2005 at which time she became a resident of the Coyne Health Care Center in Rockland.
Wife of the late Edmund J. Noonan, Sr., she leaves her three sons; Edmund J. Noonan, Jr. of Weymouth, James T. Noonan of Fitchburg and William D. Noonan of Knoxville, TN. She was the sister of the late James R. Monroe. Also survived by 11 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 21st at 9 AM at St. Ann's Church, corner of Samoset Ave. and Lewis St., Hull. Interment in Hull Village Cemetery.
