Mario Gerard “Nonno” Tierno, 89, a longtime Tewksbury resident, passed away peacefully at home with his daughter, Angela and his son in law, Rick, by his side. He was the widower of Esther (Danieli) Tierno who passed away in 1996 after over 40 years of marriage.
He was born on May 19, 1932 in Salerno, Italy, a son of the late Giuseppe Tierno and the late Philomena Tierno. He was raised and educated in Italy, growing up during a tumultuous time and place in world history. He moved to the United States, settling in Somerville where he met and married Esther. It was there they began to raise their family and live out their American dream. He worked at Brigham's Ice Cream on the production line for over 40 years before his retirement due to disability in the mid 1980’s. Along with being a life member of the Somerville City Club he had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed the 3 Stooges. He was the type of man who would give you the shirt off his back and cherished his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his 5 children; Angela Jernstedt and her hsuband, Rick, with whom he resided, of Tewksbury, Esther Bock and her husband, Kenneth, of Somersworth, NH, Kathryn Alminas and her husband, Roy, of Stoneham, Mario Tierno and his wife, Cheryl, of North Reading and Lorette Johnson and her husband, Charles, of Londonderry, NH. He is also survived by his beloved many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Along with his sister, Francesca Coiro of Somerville, they are the last remaining of 8 Tierno children.
