Obituary

Lars W. Johnson, 80, of Whitman, formerly of Brockton, died November 7, 2021, at his Whitman residence after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born in Quincy, MA to Gosta (of Quincy) and May Inga Britt (Bergstrom of Sweden) Johnson. Lars was married to the love of his life and partner, Margaret (Peg) Currie Johnson (of Brookline) for a wonderful 46 years.

Lars was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers International Association Local 17 Union, retiring as a foreman. He was recently awarded a 60-year pin in recognition of his long-standing service. He loved his work as well as the long-lasting friendships and connections he made. Lars was extremely proud to be a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran. He served his country as a Sergeant from 1964-1967. As a Mason, Lars served as the Past Master of Puritan Lodge in East Bridgewater, as well as a member of Fellowship Lodge of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of MA in Bridgewater. Lars was honored with his inclusion of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry of Valley of Boston since 2009. He also served as a Selectman for the Town of Whitman, a dignified member of the Friends of Whitman Park, and an honored member of his community. Lars was instrumental in establishing the Whitman and Hanson Gardens Tours to raise money for the Friends of Whitman Park. Lars participated and organized many fundraisers through the years for various causes throughout his numerous community ties.

Lars was a creative man, who was never without a project, even right up to his passing. He has left a legacy through these works, not only was he instrumental in the shaping of the Boston skyline but also at his Whitman residence. His expert skills and knowledge paired with his keen eye for design flow throughout his home, inside and out. Lars was a true inspiration to everyone that met him. A man of many talents but few words, he expressed himself through his works. Lars certainly loved his specialty trees, particularly Japanese maples, hydrangeas, and hostas. He took pride in his perfectly manicured lawn and strove for perfection with everything he did. His accomplishments are endless, and his legacy is forever lasting, and his expertise will truly be missed by all.

Lars leaves behind his wife Peg, son Christopher Johnson and his wife Janene of Whitman, daughter Kate Johnson of Brockton, four grandchildren, Molly Best of Whitman, Timothy of Whitman, Patrick and his wife Samantha of Boston, and Cathryn Johnson of Whitman, and one great-granddaughter, Riley of Whitman. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Carl and Stanley Johnson. Lars also leaves behind many other extended family members and friends.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to his services to be held at Blanchard Funeral Chapel (Rte. 58 at the rotary) Whitman.
