Richard D. Martin, 59, of Norton died on Saturday April 15, 2006 at his home surrounded by the love of his family. He was the beloved husband of Cheryl A. (Grinnell) Martin to whom he was wed to on June 24, 1984.
Born in Boston, MA on January 19, 1947, he was a loving son of the late Sgt. Edward J. (B.P.D. Ret.) and Eleanor R. (Withers) Martin.
Educated in Roslindale schools, he was a 1965 graduate of Roslindale High School. Before becoming a Police Officer, Richard had worked as a machinist at The Fall River Shipyard. He began his police career as an M.B.T.A. Police Officer. He then passed the exam to become a Boston Police Officer. He was first assigned to District 13 in Jamaica Plain, then to District 3 in Mattapan and then onto District 2 in Roxbury. In 1986 while assigned in Roxbury he suffered injuries in a private airplane crash in Marstons Mills. Because of his injuries he was transferred to The Boston Police Operations Division where he served as a dispatcher till the time of his death.
In 1979 he was awarded The Boston Police Medal of Honor for his bravery in the rescuing of people from a house fire. Thru out his career as a police officer he received numerous letters of accommodation. He was a member of The Boston Police Patrolman Association and The Boston Police Relief Association.
His hobbies included sailing, photography, traveling to the Virgin Islands and participating in his families sporting events. He had lived in Norton for the past 8 years and was formerly of West Roxbury and Roslindale.
In addition to his beloved wife Cheryl he is survived by his devoted children Kim A. Hurtado and her husband Leo of California, Sean R. Martin and his wife Wendy of New Hampshire and twins Sarah E. Martin and Edward Liam Martin both of Norton. His dear brother and sister Detective Paul E. Martin (B.P.D.) and his wife Rosemary of Abington and Rev. Gail P. Cocio and her husband Jack of Quincy. Also survived by his loving 7 grandchildren as well as his many nieces, nephews and cousins.
His funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Wednesday April 19th at 10:00 A.m. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield. Burial will follow in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday April 18th from 4-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, Richard’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to either The USO 228 McNair Road Building 405 Fort Myer, VA 22211 or to The Salvation Army 147 Berkley St. Boston, MA 02116.
