Obituary

Walter J. ‘Sonny' Doyle, 84 , a lifelong Lowell resident, passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2021, surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Beverly (Boyert) Doyle.

A son of the late Walter J. Doyle Sr. and the late Mary (Fahey) Doyle, he was born November 24, 1936 in Lowell, and was raised and educated in the city, graduating from Lowell High School before attending Northern Essex College.

Mr. Doyle served in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict and was honorably discharged.

His purpose and joy in life were found in his family. He had such pride and love for his daughters, his son-in-law, and his grandchildren and held special regard for his siblings, their spouses and his nieces and nephews. He looked forward to being reunited with the love of his life, his late wife, Beverly.

He made his lifelong home in Lowell and was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church. He worked as a supervisor for the United States Postal Service General Mail Facility in Reading for seventeen years before his retirement and enjoyed golfing and bowling in his spare time.

His survivors include his children, Elizabeth Hatch and her husband, Mark, of N. Chelmsford; and Patricia Doyle of Lowell; his two grandchildren, Henry and Emma Hatch both of N. Chelmsford; his sisters, Catherine Zagarella of Lowell and Rita Clark of Nashua, N.H.; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mary ‘Mae” Brooks and her husband, William Brooks Jr., his brothers, James M. Doyle and John F. Doyle; his brothers-in-law, Joseph Zagarella and Robert Clark, and his daughter Patricia’s partner, Joseph Ebbs.

You are invited to his calling hours on Friday, November 12, 2021 from 4:30 – 6:30 at the MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL, 978-458-6816.  

His funeral mass will be at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, November 13th at the Immaculate Conception Church, 144 East Merrimack St. Lowell. Burial will be held privately.

Memorial donations in his name may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society, c/o Immaculate Conception Church.
