Obituary

Eloisa de García, affectionately known as “Loloy,” age 99, of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, passed away on October 30, 2021, after a life very well-lived.

Eloisa was born on June 12, 1922 in Port Of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The youngest of her seven siblings, she was raised in Trinidad and completed her schooling through high school, when she moved to Venezuela. There, while working together at the Exxon Corporation, she met Alberto García, the man who was to become her husband. They were married in Trinidad in 1945.

After marriage, they stayed living in Venezuela and created their family of three children: Eloisa, Nellie and Alberto. Once she became a mother, Eloisa stayed home with her children and managed the home.

In 1983, she and her family moved to Jamaica Plain, where she lived in the same home until her passing.

Countless times she walked the block from her home to church, to Dunkin’ Donuts, and back. Her presence will be missed on the 39 bus route for her weekly grocery run. Boston was her home. Perhaps most obviously shown through her love of the Red Sox; a loyal fan since she moved to the U.S.

Eloisa was a pure embodiment of love. She was a woman of few words, but had a heart that beat for everyone around her. She was selfless, beautiful, kind, compassionate, strong, understanding, loyal, joyful, and always-present.

From her coveted spot on the couch where she would watch her favorite TV programs, as soon as someone entered the room, she would stop what she was doing and ask, “would you like something to drink?” She had a way of making everybody she met feel welcome.

She approached all people with kindness and respect, and as the saying goes, “people don’t remember what you said, they remember how you made them feel”; everyone who crossed Eloisa’s path felt special.

She loved spending time with her family, cooking, and hosting birthday celebrations for family and friends alike. Her birthday cakes and lemon meringue pie were legendary.

Eloisa’s perseverance in the face of life’s challenges was most inspiring. She was the rock of her family, caring selflessly for others through every stage of life. She always lived by her principles of faith, love and togetherness. She exemplified hopeful optimism, which was perhaps most present through her own diagnoses of breast cancer and heart troubles, or through the passing of her second child, Nellie in 1986, and after 50 years of marriage, the passing of her husband, Alberto in 1996.

Her unwavering faith and belief in God was admirable, as was her loyalty to her church and community. She was a shining example of dedication.

She is survived by her children, Eloisa and Alberto García, and her grandchildren, Daniel García, Melissa Neubek, and Melissa’s husband, Matthew Neubek.

A small, private service with her immediate family was held on November 2, 2021. She will be honored at the 10am Mass at St. Thomas of Aquinas on Sunday, December 12, 2021.
