Senior Chief James J. Gallagher US Navy (Retired), formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on early Wednesday morning, November 3, 2021 after a courageous fight with a long term illness. He was 72 years of age.
Jimmy was born in Naval Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida on April 16, 1949, a son of the late Boatswains Mate First Class Robert T. Gallagher US Navy (Retired) and the late Theresa "Tootie" Harrington Gallagher. He grew up in Charlestown and was educated in the Boston Public School System. Jimmy was affectionately known as "Moo Moo" by family and friends after a favorite uncle tagged him with the nickname. He entered the US Navy in December 1968, was Honorably Discharged in December 1972 and then re-enlisted in October of 1975. He completed twenty-two years of honorable and faithful active service retiring in January of 1994 at the Grade of Senior Chief with the Rating of Hull Maintenance Technician.
Jimmy's Personal Awards include the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal. His Service Decorations include the Joint Service Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster in Lieu of 2nd Award) and the Coast Guard Special Operations Ribbon for service with the Joint Task Force, Patrol Combatant Missile (Hydrofoil) Squadron Two, Mobile Logistics Support Group, NAS Key West, Florida. He also earned the Surface Warfare Officer's (SWO) Pin, five Navy Good Conduct Medals and the Vietnam Service Medal (with Bronze Star Device in Lieu of 2nd Award).
Jimmy is the beloved husband of 46 years to Beverly Britton Gallagher and father of Jennifer Peters Sangare of Jacksonville, Florida. He is the loving "Papa" to several grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as the devoted brother of Robert "Paul" Gallagher of Wakefield, MA, Major Joe Gallagher USMC (Retired) and wife Pat of Oxford, NC and Dorothy "Dolly" Pacheco of Medford, MA.
