June Marie Pina, 71, of New Bedford passed away Monday November 1, 2021 after a short illness.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Belfred E. and Georgina (Oliver) Pina, she lived in New Bedford all of her life. She was a graduate of New Bedford High School and UMass Dartmouth.
For many years, June was an admired and dedicated educator in the New Bedford Public School Department, having spent her long career at William H. Carney Academy. In her retirement, she continued her educational community outreach at Our Sisters’ School and Sunshine’s Place Child Care Center.
Active in her community, she was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, where she served as religious education coordinator and was a member and Past President of the St. Vincent DePaul Society. She had also been the Zeiterion Theater House Manager and a member of the NAACP. She was the recipient of many awards including the Davis Fellowship Award for Children's Literature, the Horace Mann Grant Creative Writing Project, and the Marian Medal from the Diocese of Fall River her service to her parish.
She is survived by her sister, Audrey Lee Pina, and many cousins.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday November 5, 2021 at 9 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Visiting hours will be on Thursday November 4 from 3-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
