Obituary

Terrence P. Smith (3/17/61 – 10/26/21)
Terrence Patrick Smith of Ledyard, Ct. died at the age of 60 on October 26, 2021 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Edith (Congdon) Smith. “Terry”… as he was known to all…was born on March 17, 1961 in Bangor, Maine and grew up in Escondido, California. He proudly served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1982.
Terry continued to serve in the Navy Reserves for over 20 years (1978-1998) as a former retired TM1/DV or “Torpedoman’s Mate/Diver” which requires an advanced military leadership education at the Naval Submarine School in Groton, Ct. He went on many missions that required him to dive and repair damaged submarines, as well as to assist in 1988 with an archeological excavation of a sunken 18th century British revolutionary war shipwreck, named “The Barrel Wreck”. The artifacts obtained were displayed at the Yorktown Victory Center of Yorktown, Virginia as part of a British Broadcasting Corporation documentary and for the National Geographic Magazine which serves as a reminder of those who dedicated themselves to the history and freedom of the United States.
Terry was committed to his family and country but loved to scuba dive, fish, hunt, and take rides on his motorcycle. He golfed and was a member of the Pequot Golf Course, did shooting at the Groton Sportsmans’ Gun Club, and was a member of the Stonington Portuguese Club. He also worked for 35 years as a dedicated Service Manager for the Densmore Oil Company. Terry was quite a character who enjoyed life to the fullest and was a blessing to all who knew him. He will be dearly missed by those who loved and respected him most.
In addition to his wife Edie, Terry is survived by his children… Danielle and her husband Matt Schoman of Mystic, as well as Kevin and his wife Tara Smith of Waterford…along with his beloved grandchildren MacKenzie, Eliza, and Olivia who he adored more than anything in the world.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Friday, November 5th 2021 at 11 a.m. at the “Ekonk” Cedar Swamp Cemetery on Cedar Swamp Rd., Sterling, Ct. on the Voluntown line (Rte. 49). Close family and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the St. Jude’s Childrens’ Hospital.
