Jane McDevitt (Heafey) passed away peacefully at the Massachusetts General Hospital on Thursday morning, October 21st. She was 79. Born and raised in Dorchester, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Mary Emily “Emma” (Fitzpatrick) Heafey. Jane graduated from Monsignor Ryan High School and went on to earn her degree from Boston College. Jane enjoyed many years as an elementary school teacher. Her career brought her to parochial schools in Dorchester, and at St. Joseph’s in Medford. She also taught for many years with Cambridge Public Schools. Once married, Jane settled in Medford with her husband Jack and raised her three sons. Jane enjoyed playing tennis for many years and was a member of the Belmont Tennis Club and the Woburn Racket Club. She was active at St. Joseph Parish and was a longtime member of the Mother’s Club there. Most of all, Jane loved spending time with her family and friends. A superb cook, she delighted her loved ones with a welcoming home and table.
The beloved wife of James “Jack” McDevitt, Jane was a devoted mother to Michael J. McDevitt of Medford, Mark McDevitt and Suzanne of Milton, and Christopher P. McDevitt and his wife Katharine of Milton. Jane was a loving grandmother to Katherine, Matthew, Ryan, and Timothy. She was a dear sister of Maureen Carew, Patricia Rotondi and the late Paul Heafey.
Her funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Friday October 29th at 10:30 AM followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High Street, Medford, at 11:30 AM. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may visit with the family on Thursday from 4 – 8 PM.
