Shelley M. Mendes, 62, of New Bedford passed away Sunday October 17, 2021. She was the wife of Steven P. Burgo.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Algie F. and Diana R. (Mendes) Wheatley, she lived in New Bedford all of her life. She was a graduate of New Bedford High School and Bristol Community College.
Shelley had worked for PACE Headstart, the New Bedford Women’s Center, and Highpoint Homeless Family Shelter as a counselor and family advocate.
She enjoyed playing cards and games, singing, dancing, and meeting people.
She is survived by her husband Steven; two daughters, Denise Mendes and Diana Mendes and her husband Michael Silva; five grandchildren, Khaelyn Mendes, Tayah Mendes, Dasanee Mendonca, Lyrik Mendonca, and Bentley Senna; her siblings, Doreen Mendes, Jeffrey Mendes, Algie “Buddy” Wheatley, Jr., Curtis Wheatley, and Joseph Wheatley; her niece who was like her daughter, Kellie Mendes; and many nieces, nephews, Godchildren, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Maria “Tynee” Mendes and Darlene “Skeet” Gonsalves.
Her visitation will be held on Wednesday October 27, 2021 from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. A private family burial will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
