In Taunton, John McGovern, age 84, passed away peacefully in his home while surrounded by his loving family following a lengthy illness on October 18, 2021. John is survived by his high school sweetheart, and beloved wife of 64 years, Margaret (Lucey) McGovern. He was born in Taunton, the son of the late Charles E. McGovern & Marion (Lamoureaux) McGovern.
John had resided all his life in Taunton. He was a graduate of Taunton High School. John worked as a lineman for the Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant and also was the owner of McGovern’s News in the Whittenton section of Taunton. He enjoyed playing cards, taking long rides with his wife, attending his grandchildren’s activities, looked forward to weekly luncheons and going to the mall with his grandson, and above all cherished his time with family.
John is survived by his loving children; John McGovern Jr. and his wife Nancy of Taunton, Mariann Punda and her husband James of Taunton, Peter McGovern and his wife Angela of East Taunton, Stephen McGovern and his wife Kelley of Raynham and his late son Kevin McGovern, his siblings; the late Everett and Robert McGovern, his grandchildren; Kara McDermott of East Taunton, John McGovern III of Taunton, Stephanie Punda of Dighton, Katie Punda of Foxboro, Julia McGovern of Malden, Rachel McGovern of East Taunton, Kerri Murphy of Pembroke, Meaghan McGovern of Raynham, Ashlee Stahelski of Pembroke, Brittanie McGovern of Foxboro and his six great grandchildren as well as four bonus grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the care of the O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington St., Taunton, MA 02780. Funeral services are private at the request of the family. Burial will be in the family lot in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Taunton.
