Johnson, Helen (Hatzis) of Hyde Park passed away peacefully on October 8, 2021 at the age of 98. Helen was born in Nashua, NH and was raised in Bridgewater, MA until 1937 when her family went to Greece where she spent 10 years through World War II.
Helen was predeceased by her husband, Demetrios Hatzis in 1947. She was the beloved mother of Joanne Hatzis McIntosh of Scituate, MA and Mary Hatzis of Hyde Park, MA. Helen was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Olga Papanicolaou. Loving sister of Sophia Raftopoulos of Greece and the late George Nichols.
Cherished grandmother of Edward and Gregory McIntosh and Elena McIntosh Ford. Great-grandmother of Nikolas, Brandon and Julia McIntosh. Great-great-grandmother of Dimitri McIntosh.
Helen worked in retail for Sears Roebuck and Co. for 44 years in the credit, auditing, catalog, and sales departments. She still found time to volunteer for the Hellenic Cardiac Fund at Boston Children’s Hospital as an interpreter for families from Greece. Helen also spent many years volunteering at the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton.
Helen taught Sunday School for over 60 years at her beloved Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral where she was awarded the Diocese Laity Award in 1992.
Visitation will be Thursday, October 14, from 10-11am at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 514 Parker St., Boston and will be followed by a funeral service at 11am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Burial will be at the Garden of Gethsemane, 670 Baker Street in West Roxbury.
