Byron Earl Edgecomb, 86, of 23 Gallup Street, Groton, died Thursday at Pendleton from complications after a fall at his home.
Born in Limestone, ME on December 27, 1919 the son of Byron & Phoebe Parent Edgecomb. He started work at a young age and was in the woods with his Dad as a teen. During summer months, they were potato farmers. During the course of his career, he had many careers; farmer, woodsman, truck driver, finally becoming an Iron Worker.
He worked all over the country building buildings and bridges. Byron worked in New York in the '60's working on the Pan Am Building, Chrysler Building, Verrazanno Bridge and other projects. He came to Groton in 1972 and purchased the home he shared with his wife of 66 years. Since his retirement 24 years ago he has been very active. He learned to Ski and has many ribbons from Competing in Senior Olympics. He was proud of his 80+ patch. Only the last 2 years he did not ski.
In his spare time, he maintained 2 fruitful gardens that provided food for the family, neighbors and anyone that stopped by. He loved to show off the results of his prize garden, and received numerous awards from the Ledyard Fair. He kept his pool clean and sparkling so that at any time it was ready for a swim. He was known as “Grampa B” by the neighborhood kids.
He met his bride, Eva Jane (Howland) Edgecomb in Limestone and was married in Keene, NH on July 25, 1939 and have been local residents since 1972.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children and their spouses;
Shirley Allen and her husband James, Robert Edgecomb and his wife Linda, Byron Edgecomb, Bruce Edgecomb and his wife Joanne; 19 Grand children; 15 Great and 1 great-grandchild; one great-great-grandchild; his brothers Willis, Gerald and Philip Edgecomb. He was predeceased by his sisters, Clara & Mildred, and a daughter, Sharon.
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Monday from 1pm-1:45pm. A service will follow at 2pm. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Donation in his memory may be made to the Center Groton Fire Department, Candlewood Road, Groton, where he was a former volunteer.
