Tami Aronson Abelew of North Truro passed away Saturday, October 2nd at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. She had been battling cancer privately for years, but she finally succumbed this week.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, she earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. She met her future husband Paul in Brooklyn. Paul was also a Clinical Psychologist and the two worked side by side for decades, helping innumerable patients over the course of their careers.
After the birth of their two daughters, Beth and Bonnie, they settled their family in Plainview, Long Island, New York. They adopted Cape Cod as a second home, renting houses every summer, one in Wellfleet for over 20 years, before finally settling in their own home in North Truro.
Tami, and the family became widely known in Provincetown due to their constant presence at shows, and their long walks with their dog Gryphon, and with his sidekick Phoenix for well over a decade. They attended nearly every show in town, often multiple times, and were huge supporters of local artists. After Paul passed in 2018, Tami and her daughters spent much of the year in Provincetown, where her daughters made a huge splash with their elaborate costumes, eventually earning a cover story in Provincetown magazine this summer. For Carnival, Tami always dressed up with the girls, whether as a cowboy, mermaid or “rainbow” bird. Tami and her girls were always out, even on her birthday just two weeks ago.
She is survived by her daughters, Beth and Bonnie Abelew, both of North Truro and Plainview, NY and her brother Alan Aronson of Florida. She was predeceased by her parents, Bernie and Rose Aronson as well as her husband Paul.
A Memorial Service is being planned at a date and time to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, Beth and Bonnie would ask for donations to be made in Tami’s name to the animal welfare charity of your choice.
