Marion V. (Martin) Whiting 97, a longtime resident of Whitman died Monday September 27 at the Hellenic Nursing and Rehab Center of Canton. She was the beloved wife of the late John A. Whiting.
Born in Double Wells, Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Jewel Martin.
She was a graduate of Rockland High School and furthered her education earning her Associate Degree from the Boston School of Fashion and Design.
Marion married her husband John on October 19, 1947 and they were married for more than 54 years. In 1951 they bought their home in Whitman and together raised their family there.
Marion was a familiar face in the Whitman community having worked for over 25 years at the former Saftlers Sewing and Fabric store, where she shared her knowledge and passion for sewing with countless customers.
Marion love to travel, and over the years visited many countries with her husband John. She was an avid Red Sox fan, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband John, her son Peter A. Whiting, her sons-in-law John J. McDonald and Robert F. Dugre, her grandson W. Matthew Whiting and her brother Allen Martin.
She is survived by her daughters Gail M. McDonald of Bridgewater and Joyce A. Dugre and her partner Martin Artioli of Hampden, MA, her daughter-in-law Rosemary Whiting of Plymouth, and her sister Janice Repeta of Franklin. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kelly J. Taxiera and her husband Michael of Wareham, Joseph J. McDonald and his wife Danielle of Bridgewater, Nathaniel A. Whiting of Chelmsford and Michael D. Dugre of Springfield, her great grandchildren Alex M. Taxiera and Alissa M. Taxiera both of Wareham and Abigail R. McDonald of Bridgewater as well as many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend her visiting hours on Friday October 1 from 5:00-7:00 PM with a service to follow at 7:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. A private burial will be held at a later date.
