Obituary


Joan (Sowerby) Foster wife of the late Kenneth F. Foster of Whitman passed away on Tuesday September 21st @ Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth with her loving son Scott Foster & his girlfriend Ally by her side.

Born in Brockton on March 4, 1941 to Roy & Alice (Davock) Sowerby.

She was a graduate of Brockton High School, Class of 1960. She then attended & graduated from the Morton Hospital School of Nursing and thereafter began her nursing career. Prior to her retirement she had worked for over 25 years at Colony House Nursing & Rehab in Abington, where she was greatly revered by her co-workers. Joan was a very compassionate and caring nurse to her patients and everyone she encountered. Her acts of kindness and compassion went well beyond her nursing career and was the very hallmark of her personality.

She enjoyed volunteering for many different things and will be remembered for being witty & full of fun. She was an avid bowler and head of a bowling league she started at Timber Lanes in Abington for many years. She loved animals and most recently adored her two cats Bonny & Clyde.

She is survived by her brother Roy Sowerby Jr. & his wife Sharon and family of Tacoma Washington. She is the mother of the late Johanna Foster O’Toole of Florida and Scott Foster and girlfriend Ally of Middleborough. Three grandchildren, Kevin Jr., Faith and Hannah O’Toole of MA, along with her cousins, Nancy Cabral, Barbara Owens and Kathy Engstrom & her best friend Marie LaCerda.

A memorial service will be celebrated at Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman on Monday September 27th at 7:00PM visitation will be prior to the service from 4:00-7:00. Burial will be at a later date.
