LIMERICK- Joanna Lynn Alexander, age 83, passed away Thursday, September 16, 2021, at Mercy Hospital with family by her side. Joanna courageously survived years of terminal illness, including cancer and even coronavirus, during 2021.
She was born September 22, 1937, daughter of the late Sarah Emmons and father, Lynnwood Doughty. Joanna was devoted to her Christian faith and graduated from New Brunswick Bible Institute in 1956.
She was an active member of church and taught vacation bible school. Joanna had many hobbies such as gardening, art, music, nursing, teaching, including membership in Maine Mineralogical and Gem Society. However, her primary dedication was to her family.
She was a firm believer in nutrition and holistic medicinal benefits, choosing to fight cancer with vitamins instead of traditional means.
Joanna is also predeceased by her brother Arthur Doughty and her son David Alexander.
She is survived by her sisters Jane Freeman and Linda Hoitt and brother Tommy Doughty. Children: Juni Alexander, Tim Alexander, Dawn Kyle, and Jody Alexander; grandchildren: Matthew Rutgers, Sarah Rutgers, Joshua Rutgers, Ramon Juanso, Amado Juanso, Charlie Alexander, Mikayla Alexander, Isaac Alexander, Rob Johnson, Matt Babb, Josh Babb, Sabin Oliver, and Sadi Martens. Grandchildren: Kaydance, Dominic, Wyatt, and Matteo.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday Sept. 24 from 10 AM – 12 noon at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel, 498 Long Plains Road (Rt. 22) in Buxton. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 12 noon with Pastor Ron Sargent officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook.
In addition, an ocean dip celebration will be held at Portland Headlights, Cape Elizabeth, in honor of her birthday, 9/22, at 1 pm.
