NEWFIELD- John Waring Ernest Gunter “Gunner”, age 81, passed away on Sept. 14, 2021, at his home in Newfield Maine after a period of declining health.
John was born in Portland, Maine on Sept. 5, 1940. The son of the late John and Agnes (Waring) Gunter. He graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1958.
As a young man John worked at his father’s lumber mill in East Baldwin Maine. During his younger years he enjoyed modifying cars and racing hot rods with friends, which began a lifelong love of cars and racing activities. He loved all dogs, especially his beagles. He was considered a legend coast to coast with over 5 million miles driven accident free.
For 39 years, John worked as an owner-operator long haul truck driver for R.C. Moore. He retired in 2016.
Besides his parents, John is predeceased by his daughter Katherine Gunter.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years Mary Ellen Gunter; children- Carole Gunter and John W. Gunter; and grandchildren- Abigail, Megan, and Zoe Gunter. As well as a large extended family of step children and step grandchildren.
Friends and family gathered with John at his home sharing memories and conversation during his time on hospice. There are no public services per John’s request.
