Meany, John K. of Needham, MA. passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Brighton, he was the beloved son of John J. Meany and Charlotte (Dillon) Meany. John attended Boston Latin School (Class of 1945), where he was on the baseball and hockey teams. He graduated from Boston College in 1949. After graduation from Boston College and his service in the United States Army, John joined National Starch and Chemical Company where he remained in various sales and management positions until his retirement in 1993. He was a staunch supporter of Boston College athletics as well as the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. His greatest achievement was winning the love of Sally (McElroy) Meany, whom he married in 1952. John is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Sally Meany, and their six children, Mary Susan Meany, John K. Meany, Jr., William C. Meany. Christopher A. Meany, Carol A. Purmort and the late Anthony Meany ; his daughter-in-law, Pamela C. Meany and former son-in-law Gary L. Purmort; and his adoring grandchildren, Jake, Billy, Stephanie and Nicky. John was also the beloved brother of the late Helen Donahue and the late Charlotte Danti. He also leaves a niece and five nephews.
His family is extremely grateful for the care given to John by Dr. Yatish Patel and thank him for his caring and kindness to John. The family is also grateful to the VNA Hospice Care that allowed John to remain comfortably in his home as he wished.
Funeral Mass will be held in Most Precious Blood Church, 30 Centre St. Dover on Thursday, September 16, at 10:30am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1 Wellesley Avenue, Needham. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made in memory of John Meany to St. Anthony’s Shrine; 100 Arch Street, Boston MA 02110.
