Katina Andros passed away peacefully on September 2nd, 2021 after a purely fulfilled life at 94 years of age. The second oldest of 6 siblings, Katina’s life journey can be one described as an adventure. Born in Sykea, Laconia, Greece, she had lived through Germany’s occupation of Greece during WWII and the trials and starvation that it brought. Having later immigrated to San Salvador, El Salvador in 1952, Katina learned Spanish and worked for 10 years until her acceptance and passage to the United States of America in 1962 through Florida. She proceeded to travel to California where Katina learned her 3rd language (English) and became a US Citizen while working as a seamstress. She eventually opened her own business, Katina’s Swags and Draperies, in which she designed and made custom draperies of all styles. At age 50, Katina found the love of her life and married. Katina’s love of both faith and family saw her heavily involved in both, being a founder of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Camarillo, CA and a member of both Philoptochos and Daughters of Penelope of Ventura county.
Proceeded in death by her father Constandinos Askounis, mother Oreanthy Dumakis, brother Yiannis Askounis, sister Afroditi Chtouros (who shared all of her older sister’s life adventures) and husband James H. Andros of 13 years. Katina leaves behind sisters Yiannoula Santikos (Panayiotis) and Koula Sarganis (Theodore), brother George Askounis (Kathy) and brother in-law George Chtouros; immediate nieces and nephews Irene/Kathy Santikos, Katina/Costandinos Sarganis, Maria/Constandinos Askounis, and Helen Ioannidis; and many other (great) nephews/nieces, God children and step-daughter Rebecca Andros (William Gallaway). Many thanks to the staff of the Palms at Bonaventure for the many years of care and to the hospice staff, whose team was equally caring and attentive.
Private services for both the Trisagion and Funeral will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church (Camarillo, CA) or to the Philoptochos Society. Arrangements are under the direction of then JOSEPH P. REARDON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICE, Ventura.
