Obituary

Worcester: George Elliott Roberts, 85, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2021. He leaves three sons, Andrew, George and Gerald; four grandchildren and four great-grand children. He was predeceased by his loving wife and best friend of forty years, Helene (Scherle) Roberts, his brother Alvin and three sisters, Betty, Ella, and Jean. He leaves a number of nieces and nephews.

George was born on September 18, 1935 in Slab Fork, West Virginia to Alvin and Chloe (Elliott) Roberts. After graduating from Sophia High School in West Virginia, he enlisted in the US Army at age 17 with his parents’ permission. He was stationed and served honorably in Germany during the Korean War. While there, he met Helene Scherle; they married in 1956. In March 1958, after his discharge from the army, George, Helene and their two oldest sons lived in West Virginia before relocating to Worcester in 1959 so Helene could be closer to her sister. George found work at New England Water Meter Company and developed many skills as a fledgling machinist. His third son, Gerald, was born in 1960.

In the mid- 1970s, he began work as second-shift supervisor with Norton Co. (St. Gobain). Later in life, he served as a lay pastor at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Worcester and as chaplain for the Chester P. Tuttle Post 279 of the American Legion in Auburn.

George was a good husband and father and an avid reader and learner who enjoyed art, bowling, and learning to polka with Helene. Some years after Helene's death, he shared 21 years with Dorothy Poulin of Auburn, who passed away in February 2020.
