Robert F. "Bob" Rooney, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Bob was born at home in Charlestown on July 7, 1936, a son of the late John T. Rooney and Teresa M. (Collins) Rooney-Pollack and her husband Philip Pollack. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended St. Mary's Parochial School and graduated from Don Bosco Technical High School in East Boston. Bob worked for the United States Postal Service at South Postal Annex, Post Office Square and finally his home town of Charlestown where he spent almost the last 30 years of his career. He retired as a Clerk In Charge following 42 years of dedicated service to the U.S. Postal Service. Bob was a devout catholic and he dedicated a majority of his life to his church of St. Mary's in Charlestown where he was a member and Past President of the St. Vincent De Paul Society, St. Mary's Pastoral Council and Finance Committee. He was a eucharistic minister and altar server for many masses at St. Mary's Church. He was a longtime volunteer at Harvest on The Vine Food Pantry in Charlestown and member of The Charlestown Historical Society and the Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association. He was a former coach for Charlestown youth hockey and in his spare time he enjoyed woodworking and was an avid history buff. Family was paramount in Bob's life and he always cherished the moments and special occasions he shared with his wife, 4 children and especially his grandchildren who he always encouraged and took great pride in all their accomplishments.
Bob is the beloved husband of the late Patricia A. (Hayes) Rooney. He is the devoted father of Patricia Pesaturo and her husband James, Gerry Rooney and his wife Beth, Eileen Rooney and her wife Leah and the late Bobby Rooney and his surviving wife Ani. He is the loving Grampa to Anthony, Daniel, Sarah, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Rachel, Hannah, Gerard Jr., Terrell, Benjamin and Grampa Bob to Mikey, Billy, Anthony, Gregory, Caroline, William, Fallon and Finn. He is the beloved brother of Philip Pollack and his wife Rosa, William Pollack and his late wife Barbara the late John Rooney and his surviving wife Sharon and the late Eleanor "Sis" Santosuoso and her late husband Michael. He is also survived by his many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bob's Funeral on Friday, September 10, 2021 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. His entombment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum in Malden. His visiting hours will be on Thursday, September 9, 2021 from 4 to 7 P.M. in the funeral home.
