Michael Roy Monteiro, age 63, of New Bedford and formerly of Scituate, Mass. passed away on August 27, 2021 after a brief illness at St. Luke’s Hospital, in New Bedford. He was surrounded by his loving son, daughter and siblings. He was the beloved husband of Doreen Soares of New Bedford.
Michael was born on July 21, 1958 in Boston, Mass. to Katherine and Roy Monteiro. He graduated from Scituate High School in 1976. He took engineering courses at Wentworth Institute of Technology. He then sought to further cultivate his creative talents and thus graduated from the Butera School of Art in Boston in May of 1998.
Michael was well known in the community for his sign painting and lettering work. He had his own company named “Michael’s Sign Design” and created the slogan “A business with no signs shows signs of no business”. He completed many jobs throughout the City of New Bedford. He also completed sign painting and lettering work in other cities such as Boston, Brockton, New York and Los Angeles. The portfolio of his original work is a testimony to his creativity and talent. He also worked for 7th Sign out of New Bedford for many years. About ten years ago he retired and became the devoted caretaker to his wife Doreen.
Michael was a servant of the Lord who enjoyed reading, studying and found comfort in the Bible throughout his life, especially during difficult times. His favorite passage that he often quoted by memory is John 16:32-33.
Since childhood, Michael was a passionate baseball fan and his favorite team was the Boston Red Sox. He knew all of their statistics. He also enjoyed listening to music, singing and dancing. One of his favorite artists was Marvin Gaye; and he tells a story of the amazing letter he received from him back in 1983. If you were blessed to cross paths with Michael, he would have you laughing and smiling instantly with his quick wit and his amazing story telling skills. He shares a dramatic story about when he, as a child, swiftly ran and jumped into Tony Conigliaro’s car after a baseball game. He impressed Mr. Conigliaro so much that Michael got his baseball signed by him! Over the years Michael wrote to and received a wonderful acknowledgment from Mr. Conigliaro that made him feel proud.
